Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin. The active form, pyridoxil phosphate(PLP), is a co factor in many reactions of amino acid metabolism, including transamination, deamination, and decarboxylation. It is also necessary for the enzymatic reaction governing the release of glucose and glycogen.

Health Benefits of Vitamin B6

  • Synthesis of essential molecules

The amino acids, building blocks of protein, require adequate supplies of B6 for synthesis. The DNA nucleic acids, also need this for their synthesis. Heme (the protein center of our red blood cells) and phospholipids (our cell membrane components that allow messaging between cells) also depend on vitamin B6 for their creation.

Along with vitamins B12 and B9 (folic acid), B6 helps control levels of amino acids, homocysteine in the blood.

  • Processing of carbohydrate

It helps in the breakdown of glycogen.

  • Support of nervous system activity

Some amine-derived neurotransmitters like serotonin, melatonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and GABA, require vitamin B6 for their production.

  • Support of sulfur and methyl metabolism and detoxification

Vitamin B6 is able to remove sulfur groups from other molecules, it helps the body maintain flexibility in handling sufur-containing compounds, and helps in detoxification of the body.

  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration

It will prevent the Age-Related Macular Degeneration, if taken daily.

  • Depression and PMS

It helps your body make serotonin, a chemical that influences mood.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

Low levels of vitamin B6 have been associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
