Alanine is a nonessential amino acid with a key role in the glucose-alanine cycle between muscle tissue and the liver. The degraded amino acids from the muscle and other tissues , are transported to liver as Alanine and α-ketoglutarate. In the liver the reaction is reversed and glucose is formed and reaches other tissues through blood.
The contraction of muscle results in increased alanine levels within the body.
Alanine is found in a wide variety of foods, but is particularly concentrated in meats.
As an amino acid, alanine is used by the body as a building block of protein. Alanine plays a major role in transferring nitrogen from tissue sites in the body, to the liver.
